Update on the Status of Yoo Joonghyuk

During this process, we were able to verify that this video was posted with neither the consent nor knowledge of either parties involved. Due to the sensitive nature of the video content, our investigations will continue with the careful guidance of our legal experts.

The artist himself has expressed his sincere apology for the discomfort caused to all fans due to this incident. All activities will be suspended until this investigation has concluded.

As a company, we are committed to a full investigation and will carry out all necessary measures to address the concerns raised by our fans. We ask for your understanding and patience as we continue with this process.

An update will be provided at a later date.

Lee Seolhwa finds Yoo Joonghyuk ensconced inside one of the company’s smaller conference rooms.

Even now, his back is straight and his shoulders are squared off, as if he’s perpetually in the face of battle, and his knuckles are white with the tight grip he has on his pen. If it was any other situation—or if Seolhwa had less grace—she might’ve cracked a joke about the pen being more of a sword, with all the anger channeled into his pen grip.

But she’s Lee Seolhwa, and so instead, she pads up next to Joonghyuk. Close enough to catch the shape of the vowels on the paper, but far enough to be of no threat.

“Joonghyuk-ah,” she says.

He doesn’t look at her. Although she can’t see his face from this angle, she already knows that his mouth must be twisted into his perpetual scowl and his eyebrows, yet again, furrowed so deeply that she once worried it would never smoothen.

Seolhwa thinks of what to say next. This is a delicate situation and it’s hard to find the words that feel as if they suffice. My manager told me about the suspension or I saw the news on the internet doesn’t feel particularly helpful right now. She worries at her bottom lip.

It’s Joonghyuk who breaks the silence first. He looks up and locks eyes with her. “Did you watch the video, Lee Seolhwa?”

“No, of course not.” Seolhwa frowns. “That’s not for me to watch.”

Joonghyuk doesn’t say anything in response. If Seolhwa didn’t know him as well as she does, she might not have noticed the nearly imperceptible way his shoulders relax. But she does and the sight leaves a pang in her heart. She knew he’d be affected by the leak—not to mention its impact on his professional career—but it’s hard to see a friend like this.

She tucks a loose curl behind her ear and thinks of what to say. In the end, she sighs and musters, “How are you doing?”

“I’m fine.”

It’s just like Joonghyuk to respond like this. Seolhwa doesn’t push. Their long-lasting friendship rests on boundaries.

Instead, she tries to smile. “I convinced my team to release the news of my comeback earlier. It’ll hit the air this week.”

Joonghyuk’s expression doesn’t change, but he nods. It’ll take a lot more time to detract the media and the public’s attention away from his scandal, but South Korea’s Sweetheart announcing her comeback will help—even if only minutely.

“And the drama?”

Seolhwa doesn’t mince her words, but her tone is sympathetic. “My manager said that we’re taking a week-long break in filming while they search for a new actor to play the male lead.”

Joonghyuk nods again, like it’s just as he expected. Silence lapses between them, neither fully comfortable nor discomfiting. On any other day, these moments of quietude between them are solace for Seolhwa, especially after days packed with schedules, but there’s no consolation found or given in this situation.

She sighs, and wishes she had more to offer him. Empty platitudes would irk him more than comfort, though, and she knows that.

Perhaps sensing the end of the conversation, or wishing to end it, Joonghyuk drops his pen back onto the table as if it reviles him, where it clatters noisily against the wood veneer, and stands up from the chair. He grabs the piece of paper off the desk.

Before he can leave, Seolhwa notices one thing. “Ah,” she says, and he pauses in his stride towards the door. “Are you here alone today?”

Joonghyuk pauses, his back to her. “Yes,” he says, “my manager is home today.”

“Is Dokja-ssi—”

“Excuse me,” interrupts Joonghyuk, and the words come out slightly sardonic, “but I have this apology letter to submit so the staff can post it online.”

He leaves, but the question is just as good as answered. Seolhwa frowns as she stares at the door, a worry rising up and into her chest. She hopes they’ll be okay.

Han Sooyoung has long perfected her routine for when she returns home from work each day.

As soon as she steps through her door, keys drop into the shitty lemon-shaped ceramic bowl that Dokja gave her for her housewarming, and she shuffles her feet into a threadbare pair of house slippers that she’s reluctant to toss out. Then, she throws her bag onto the floor, strips completely naked and tosses her clothes (blouse, blazer, and pants as stretchy as she can get away with her overbearing boss) onto her bed, then scurries into the washroom to take a dump.

There’s nothing like coming home from work to sit on the toilet.

On her porcelain throne, she catches up on a full day of the internet that she missed while being a high school Korean literature teacher. Before Dokja had moved out, he used to whine about how long she’d take in the washroom. But it’s ritual. Therapeutic. Her therapist once told her to create routines of comfort, and this is one of them.

She’s trudging her way through DC Inside when a familiar name catches her attention. Her thumb hovers over the post with a brief second of hesitation before she taps on it.

“Crazy bastard, what did you do...”

Like most posts on DC Inside, the original poster didn’t add a lot beyond their post title. Even that is vague and abstract; a simple Yoo Joonghyuk is a crazy jerk. That, Han Sooyoung knows as a fact—first hand.

But that guy’s one of the most famous actors in all of Seoul. Whether you love him or hate him, it’s indisputable that his acting chops are supreme. At one point, she couldn’t go two hours in her classroom without hearing about Yoo Joonghyuk as Kwon Wonwoo in the KBS drama called Midnight Battle. Her students loved him. And then she’d return home to her shared apartment with Kim Dokja, who also wouldn’t stop talking about Yoo Joonghyuk as Kwon Wonwoo in Midnight Battle, and she’d scream.

Dokja’s habit of talking too much about Joonghyuk never did get any better. Sooyoung knows, unfortunately, way too much about him.

She scans through the comments, but most of the commenters have nothing to offer but a trail of ㅋㅋㅋ across the screen. A few comments are filled with disgust. Some with outrage. The worst part, however, is the fact that regardless of how uninformative and unsubstantial they are, there are a lot comments.

Something’s not right. An unsettled feeling tugs at the back of her mind as she continues reading through the comments. There’s only one reason why Korean netizens would congregate together on forum boards like this, and it’s never a good reason. Her stomach sinks with trepidation.

As she finishes wiping, she stands up to flush the toilet. She turns, then one comment catches her eyes just as she’s flushing, and she taps the link before she can think about it. The link directs her to a video on Twitter.

It autoplays. Of course it does—because if Sooyoung had caught sight of the preview image in time, if she had any inkling at all of what the video would contain—she would have never have clicked it.

So, unbidden, the video plays. It all happens in a few quick seconds. She catches sight of long, pale limbs. A broad back and a familiar set of wide shoulders. The bodies flip, one on top of the other, faces pushed together. A small waist, leading down to an even smaller ass—

Sooyoung jolts. “Holy fuck!” she shouts in shock. “Fucking gross!”

Because she recognizes the funnily-shaped birthmark on that ass. She’s bathed with that ass since she was three years old and that ass—and its owner—was five years old. She used to make fun of that ass for having a birthmark that looks vaguely like an elephant if you squinted just right. She does not want to see that ass, especially not in this context.

“Holy fucking shit,” says Sooyoung again, this time with more feeling as she registers what she’s actually watching. And what has been publicized for all of the internet to see.

The sinking feeling in her stomach turns heavy with dread. She hastily closes Twitter and contemplates deleting the app from her phone as if that would scourge the video from her brain. Sooyoung clumsily navigates to KakaoTalk. She needs to check on—

And then her phone slips from her hand. It seems almost as if it's falling in slow motion, but her body is slow to react, still parsing through the shock to its system from the video. Sooyoung watches helplessly as her phone falls straight into the toilet bowl. It drops in with a plop, and a little splash.

“Holy fuck,” Sooyoung cries out, this time for a different reason entirely.

Kim Dokja has not watched the video.

On his bedside table, his phone vibrates once more. He sees Sooyoung’s name flash across the screen, and underneath her name are the words, you owe me a new phone, you shithead.

Huh. Dokja doesn’t know what she means, but he assumes she’s seen the video by now. Doesn’t matter—he decides not to respond. His notifications have been a constant buzz throughout the day, and for the first time in his life, Dokja doesn’t feel too inclined to check his phone.

There’s an itch under his skin that burns a little. Whether it’s the residual guilt that lingers, or whether it’s the masochistic part of himself that wants to delve into the comments and read everything that’s said about him on the internet—he doesn’t know. It is, however, perhaps the first time in his life that he’s been so detached from his device.

Maybe he’ll break his phone addiction, Dokja thinks a little wryly to himself. Though, it helps that he’s now unemployed and is no longer professionally required to be at the beck and call of some diva asshole celebrity.

He tries once more to submerge himself in Sooyoung’s latest manuscript. Dokja manages to fly through the next couple of pages, red pen in hand, before he loses focus again. He thinks back to a childhood spent between the pages and fitting himself in the kerning between letters, and lets himself lament on how much easier it had been back then. Somehow, in his adulthood, he’s lost some of the steel armour and imperviousness to distress that he’d painstakingly built.

His mind wanders. The persistent lump in his throat that tastes like dread metastasizes.

Speaking of diva asshole celebrity—a clatter at the doorway catches his attention and he sits up from his chair. A mop of dark hair ducks through the bedroom door, and the mop of hair is attached to a handsome and incorrigibly grumpy face.

“It’s your fault I’m all soft now,” Dokja greets him accusingly, and tips his head back for a kiss. Warm lips press against his, and he feels himself soften all the bit more.

“You’re still too bony,” Joonghyuk says.

Dokja rolls his eyes and doesn’t bother to correct him. He stretches back with a big yawn, then loops his arms around Joonghyuk’s neck. “How did it go? Did you have to kneel on the ground for forgiveness?”

With the way he’s reclining backwards in the chair, Joonghyuk’s face is upside down to Dokja’s gaze, but the subtle tightening of Joonghyuk’s features aren’t amiss on him. Work didn’t go well, then. It doesn’t come as a surprise; it’d be hard for the company to completely sweep the scandal under the rug, even with Joonghyuk’s star status.

But the lump in Dokja’s throat grows heavier. He lets go of Joonghyuk and looks down at his lap. Fuck. What if he really ruined Joonghyuk’s career?

“They still won’t tell me when you can come back to work,” Joonghyuk grumbles, as if that’s even the biggest issue.

Instead of moving out of his stooped position, which can’t be too comfortable for someone as big as him, he props his chin on the crown of Dokja’s head. Joonghyuk noses at his hair before he stands up.

“Have you eaten dinner yet?”

Dokja silently shakes his head, but doesn’t bother to tell Joonghyuk that he doesn’t have much of an appetite. He follows him into the kitchen. His mind races as he thinks through their situation, the video, and their jobs.

“I’ll make mandu-guk,” says Joonghyuk, with a little glance at Dokja. “I still have some bones to make broth from the chicken thighs we had yesterday.”

His hands reach for the fridge door, but Dokja intercepts. He entangles his fingers with Joonghyuk’s much longer ones, and thinks about how much care is carried out with those calloused hands. The food he makes, the food he feeds Dokja, and the silent words that are folded and filled inside Joonghyuk’s perfectly pleated homemade mandu.

I’ll fix this, Dokja says, but doesn’t say out loud. I won’t let myself be the ruin of your career. Those, too, are silent words.

Aloud, he says, “I’ll start on the broth. You wash up first, stinky,” and doesn’t wait for Joonghyuk to respond.

This is how it starts, or perhaps this is how it ends; it all depends from which perspective you read this:

Or, if you’d rather go from the very beginning, it starts here:

“Are you kidding me?” Sooyoung rudely shoves her phone into his face until his vision blurs from the glow of the screen. “You’re not going to apply?”

He bats her hand away. “Stop it, you’re going to make me go blind,” he complains, “and why would I apply to be a celebrity manager? I doubt I have the qualifications.”

“What qualifications? It’s a minimum wage job.”

Dokja frowns at her. Wealthy kids, seriously. “It seems like a very difficult and underappreciated job. Which is another reason why I don’t want to apply. Why would I work that hard?”

Sooyoung rolls her eyes. “You know that’s not what I meant. No one’s saying it’s not hard. But it’s entry level—it doesn’t matter whether you have experience or not.” She waves her hand dismissively in the air. “Besides, you have transferable skills. And connections. I could connect you to Yoo Sangah—”

“Okay, fine,” Dokja cuts in. “But still: why would I want to work that hard?”

“Because your contract is ending. And you’ll be unemployed. And then you won’t be able to pay rent.” Sooyoung drops her hand onto her hips and stares him down. “Besides, isn’t that your favourite actor’s company? Who knows, maybe you’ll even get to pass by him in the hallways sometimes.”

Dokja would rather die than meet Yoo Joonghyuk in the flesh. He doesn’t say that, though, and instead turns his attention back to his phone. “No, thanks.”

There’s a beat of silence where Dokja can feel the weight of Sooyoung’s eyes on him. He holds out, though, and keeps his gaze focused on his screen. If he stands strong, she’ll let go eventually.

“Okay.” Sooyoung sounds resigned. “Fine.”

Just as he’s about to breath out in relief, he can see the wide stretch of smile on her mouth in the periphery of his vision. His stomach tugs out underneath him. Oh no.

“That’s fine because I knew you were going to say that, you ornery fucking bastard,” continues Sooyoung, her voice pitched with triumph.

Oh no.

“Sooyoung,” he begins, and looks up just in time to see the flash of her teeth.

“So I applied for you,” Sooyoung says, her grin now wide enough that he’s tempted to smack it off her face. “And you’ve been invited in for a panel interview in two days at ten in the morning. Better get your suit ready, Kim Dokja.”

His heart drops right with his stomach. “Sooyoung, I’m not going—”

“Yes, you are.” Sooyoung slaps the table with one hand, the resounding thwunk an ominous echo in Dokja’s bare apartment. “You can thank me after you get the job. Who knows, maybe you’ll even get to see Yoo Joonghyuk twice in the hallways.”

Of course, Dokja’s life was doomed from the start. He gets the job, and then gets assigned to work as Yoo Joonghyuk’s newest manager.

And despite what comes later, it's the best thing to ever happen to Kim Dokja.

Han Sooyoung descends upon him like a predator bird as soon as he steps out of the elevator lift. She shouldn’t even be allowed into the company building, but Joonghyuk guesses that Yoo Sangah must have let her in.

“So?” she demands, her hands shoved deep into her pockets as she scowls up at him. “And what took you so long? Sangha said she texted you half an hour ago. I almost got kicked out of your stupid building.”

Joonghyuk spares a glance at the security kiosk, who’s watching them warily as if Sooyoung is a sasaeng and Joonghyuk’s about to fistfight again, and turns on his heels to slip back into the elevator. He ignores Sooyoung as she follows closely behind.

She whistles loudly when the elevator lets out a ding as it completes its facial recognition scan. The red numbers lit up on the LED display start to count backwards as they descend to the parkade. “Fancy,” she comments, and shoves her finger against the scanner. It beeps. “So why did you take so long to come and get me?”

His car is nestled next to one of the pillars and half-hidden behind the wall. Normally, Joonghyuk doesn’t drive himself home from work -- he has a manager for that. Or did. His stomach roils with frustration as he pulls out his keys and irritably presses the unlock button on his fob.

Sooyoung invites herself into his car and swings herself into the passenger seat. She buckles up and prods him again, this time with a finger to his rib. “I’ll kill you if you don’t answer me.”

Joonghyuk shoves her hand away from him and rubs at the ticklish spot. “Kim Dokja will not be returning to work for the foreseeable future,” he says instead, brusquely as to cut through her bullshit.

i was inspired by [profile] stickyarchives writing plans for 2021 and [profile] boyteared who wrote the original post about their writing plans for 2021! thank you both for sharing your insights, progress, and goals for the rest of the year - it was inspiring to read their reflections and i wanted to share mine as well. i thought this would be a good way to organize some of my thoughts and wips on the horizon, and as a way to juggle the many ideas that may or may not come to fruition.Read more... )
geguri: (Default)
a continuation of a cc question on how i stick through with an idea/concept

how i personally do it is that i tend to get an idea and then i really, really, really let the idea just percolate in my mind. marinate it!!! i think it over in the shower, i go on walks and turn it this way and that, i have sleep issues so sometimes i just lay there and think about how i want to continue building it and slowly i gather this little nest of ideas that precariously stack on top of one another. and then i usually talk to someone. not always, but i like being able to voice it out loud (or through text) to a friend because it forces my brains to make connections between plot points or to see gaps where it's apparent that the plot has to be further fleshed out still. and if the friend is someone who tends to respond well to plot ideas, having a dialogue back-and-forth really helps ideas to continue to build and develop! and often, it inspires me too!

and then what i try to do is that i try to organize my thoughts -- and honestly, this is where i think this starts being potentially unhelpful to anyone else -- because as a person, i really can't stand having my mind immersed in chaos. which is...actually inherently my perpetual state of mind actually, but then i feel that to get traction on work, i have to start organizing things. and so i write everything down. before i write a single scene, i write down EVERYTHING i want to convey and i actually do it in sequential list form. i typically write it "scene by scene" as it would progress in the story, and i don't only include the "actions" but also the intention behind my narrative voice in that specific scene.

and it's not always developed ideas either; sometimes it's as simple as "i want this scene to build a contrast in how the relationship between wonwoo and soonyoung has developed through the little moments of intimacy when soonyoung stays over. a non-linear way of showing how soonyoung used to leave immediately after sleeping with wonwoo, to how they've become a lot more domestic as we see in the opening scene of the fic" (and then this took shape in the scene in amosac where soonyoung makes wonwoo dinner at his apartment and they sleep together for the first time since their one night stand).

sometimes, it's incredibly specific (i had a detail about soonyoung drinking yogurt soju the first night they meet in amosac because he doesn't like the taste of alcohol. actually, that detail was omitted in the writing process, but it was in the outline lol). and then, again, i do this scene by scene because the way my brain likes to work is through building blocks that build upon one another to reach the resolution (or lack thereof, whatever your intention is).

when i write, i then use my outline as a guideline but i tend to veer off course as the events develop. i usually build in flexibility in my outlines knowing this happens 100% of the time for me, and so i just let it develop -- but my outlines are usually there to guide me in terms of what emotional sticking points i'm hoping to land and what development i'm trying to introduce. for me, this is honestly usually enough to get me going from start to finish! there are little things for me too, like i cannot post any fic that isn't complete because my brain goes "haha u posted now ur donesies" if i post wips. any wip i've posted without finishing it first, i have abandoned it. kudos to people whose brain don't do this!

that being said, i think a lot of other people can thrive and build off so much more with messiness and chaos and get really organically-grown narratives that work perfectly! i think there's a lot of value in trusting your own writer's instinct, and i definitely think you don't need to outline (or as detailed as i cant get at times). sometimes, having an outline actually ends up limiting you and how much you want to write. you know what i just said about my brain going "you're done!" when i post wips? sometimes, writing an outline may trick your brain into thinking the exact same thing. if you find that outlining isn't working for you, i would actually just try writing! any scene! a line of dialogue! the very beginning! somewhere in the middle! trying just letting it build and see how it feels for you!

in terms of staying committed to a plot, my brain tends to get really fixated on singular things until it's finally finished with it. until then, i can be a bit of a dog with a bone and this is a bit of a driving force behind finishing fics for me. i also do follow terry pratchett's 400 words a day except i do "one scene a day" instead. setting up a manageable routine can be helpful in terms of staying guided while you write! i tend to write during the same day every day, which i can manage mostly because i work a 9-to-5 job with a stable schedule.

in the past (i.e. pre-pandemic) i also tried to work in environments that i personally focus better in. those would be cafes, but well, i can't really do that anymore. there are some rooms or spaces in my apartment that i work better in though, so i am mindful of that as well!!

another thing too is that i find it personally helpful to try and internalize the fact that i can edit afterwards. like, not being afraid of edits and letting my first draft be a little bad or a little lacklustre so that i can just lay down the brickwork and return to build upon it with fresh eyes (or with a new perspective of where your plot has taken a turn). if i'm unsure about a scene or a line, i often mark it with a comment ("i think this exchange sounds a little stilted. maybe i want this to sound more natural?") and return to it later. again, this is super subjective, because you might prefer editing on the spot! and that is totally valid too!!

sdjfjsdf anyway this was a super long response but i'm not sure how helpful this actually is ;_; i'm sorry, i know it's super subjective overall and everything i said might actually be hard for you to work with!!! but if you have any follow-up questions or want me to expand on anything or if you want to share anything at all, please let me know!!! good luck <33

A few days ago, I received a really lovely message on CuriousCat that asked me the following question:
i'm curious as to what's your general overview of hoshi? like when u think of him what pops up immediately in ur mind? u can talk abt him as a person and all that deep talk but it can also be just your version of word vomit of what makes him your bias?
As I started thinking through how to answer this question, I tried to disentangle how my own perceptions of Soonyoung (as flawed and as biased and as subjective as they must be) have been formed over time. And I realized that in my mind, I tend to organize information in terms of its source and intention: what others have said about him, what he says about himself, and what he says about others. Or in other words: how you are perceived, how you self-reflect, and how you act and behave towards others.

I will subsequently be breaking down this post into sections:Read more... )

A couple days ago, I received a very lovely message on CuriousCat, and in their message, they also asked why I ship SoonWoo. This is something I've been mulling over for awhile, and to be honest, I always struggle with fully encapsulating my thoughts on this because I find that I want to say so much and each attempt I make at externalizing my thoughts leads me to chaotic circles with no end in sight.

And so this is my first attempt of capturing some of the main reasons why I am drawn to SoonWoo. This post can also be read as the main pillars of how I perceive and write SoonWoo, just because my reasons for liking them are entangled with how I write them. These pillars are organized under five keywords: peripheries, knowledge, perseverance, reciprocity, and intention.

I have to warn you that this is a work-in-progress, and much of the base thinking for a lot of this is born out of continued conversations with friends. I did not include citations for everything I reference. Maybe once I flesh out these thoughts further, I can revisit this and eventually flush this out further. For now, please bear with my barely cohesive and half-formed thoughts! Read more... )

I was asked about my thoughts on Soonyoung's love languages in my CuriousCat and because I am horrifically verbose, I ended up writing over 2500 words just rambling about him. God. I am so sorry.

Fair warning: this is largely unedited, and is also hugely subjective. Nonetheless, I hope this is an entertaining read for anyone who is willing to suffer through the wall of text below. It is also image heavy at some parts of the post too!

Please let me know if any of the links are missing! Admittedly, I did not check thoroughly!

tl;dr - I personally think his love languages are physical touch and quality time, but with a very heavy dosing of words of affirmation (and he has a praise kink). Read more... )
